How to deal with the architectural and cultural heritage of the Bauhaus in terms of a museum building? X ARCHITEKTEN  in cooperation with FORM SOCIETY and Lindle+Bukor/studio for landscape have developed a concept for the new Bauhaus Museum in Dessau that prevented discussions about the possible shape of an architectural landmark and introduced instead a topography emanating from local conditions. The project evolved dynamically – considering the interconnection between the new museum, the urban space, and the green space at the building site. The competition site in Dessau’s city park was once occupied by town houses of the Gründerzeit, which were destroyed during the Second World War. By lifting up the north-east corner of the park, the project restores the former building edge becoming the new façade layer of the museum. Simultaneously, it generates a definite entrance situation into the museum within the city. The compact arrangement of programmatic areas and their connection define the layout of the museum. A central foyer leads to the exhibition space, educational and service facilities, as well as to the shop and the café with their own outdoor areas. The autonomous logistics area connects the loading dock with the exhibition space. The museum’s administration has immediate access to all areas of the museum. Furthermore, the spaces and facilities of the museum are organized to be covered by the landscape, which leads partly to the spatial organization of the museum in split levels. The project preserves the full area of the park while parts of it are programmatically enforced by the introduction of a new network of paths and its incorporation into the activities of the museum. At the same time, the project enhances the definition of the streets in terms of city planning and offers new activities to the public space.
