An interactive project addressing the sale of architectural substance
The shack in front of the Austrian pavilion at the Biennale will be sold piece by piece during a special architectural activity week. Visitors to the Architecture Biennale will be invited to make a piece of the shack their own by using a saw to cut out a fragment in a size and shape of their choice. The shack’s original form will be changed through the buyers‘ creative activity – the sale of the individual pieces will lead to the emergence of new architecture. This architecture’s substance is split between the „positive forms“ represented by the parts of varying size and shape cut out by the buyers and the „negative forms“ – holes – apparent in the ever-changing form of the perforated shack. Will the parts be worth more than the whole? – or will the shack as a whole see its value decline?
This project reflects on transformations in form and substance, which are metaphors for the paradigm of „privatization through the sale of equity.“ By doing so, the project addresses such phenomena as form and organisation, the demarcation of borders, and varying grades of utilisation, obsolescence and added value, as well as refinement and changes in meaning.Chop

Eine Aktion über den Verkauf architektonischer Substanz: Die Bude vor dem österreichischen Biennale-Pavillion wird während der Aktionswoche Stück für Stück verkauft. Die Besucher der Architekturbiennale werden vor Ort aufgefordert, sich ihr persönliches Stück der Bude in beliebiger Form und Größe mit der Säge herauszuschneiden. Die ursprüngliche Gestalt der Bude wird durch den kreativen Akt des Käufers verändert, der Verkauf der Teile läßt eine neue Architektur entstehen. Die Substanz der Architektur spaltet sich in die von den Käufern bestimmte Gestalt der herausgeschnittenen Teile – Positivformen – und in die sich sukzessive transformierende Gestalt der ausgebeuteten Bude – Negativformen (Löcher) – auf. Werden die einzelnen Teile mehr Wert als das Ganze oder verliert das Ganze an Wert? Das Projekt reflektiert Gestalt- und Substanztransformationen, Metapher für das Paradigma „Privatisierung durch Verkauf“. Phänomene wie Form und Organisation, Grenzziehung, unterschiedliche Grade der Verwertung, Wertverlust und Wertzuwachs, Bedeutungswandel und Veredelung werden thematisiert.
